Watermelon Slim & The Workers
A name like Watermelon Slim can only mean one thing, he's a bluesman. In fact he's so blues he's one of a select handful to pick up six Blues Music Awards nominations in a single year, ranking him alongside the likes of BB King, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray.
He's recorded albums solo and with his band The Workers, a group of old school sidesman whose cvs reads like a whose who of the blues scene, including many musicians that are still alive today.
Ironically was a brush with death, heart attack, that refocused Watermelon Slim on the things that were really important in his life and blues was right there near the top.
If you're wondering where the name comes from, he used to farm them, one of the many jobs that supplemented the blues wage for a greenback dollar. It's not just the playing, he's there with the subject matter, the rights of the working man, the right not to die in someone elses war.
